What insulation actually does

  1. The sun bakes the roof

On a July afternoon an Alabama attic can pass 130°F, and that heat pushes down toward your ceiling.

  2. Insulation stops it at the attic floor

Installed to the right depth, it keeps that heat up where it belongs instead of in your living room.

  3. The house stays cool

Your AC runs less, upstairs stops being the hot floor, and the power bill comes down.

Does any of this sound like your house?

Check what applies. Most of these trace back to the same few inches above your ceiling.

Signs your insulation may be falling short

Nothing checked yet.

Worth a look. An attic inspection will show whether insulation is behind it.

That combination usually points to an under-insulated attic, air leaks, or both. We can measure it.

What a thermal camera sees

Missing insulation and air leaks show up in color long before you'd spot them by eye. We use infrared imaging to find exactly where heat is getting through.

Four materials, matched to the space

There's no single best insulation. The right one depends on where it goes, how the space is framed and what you want to spend. We install all four in homes and commercial buildings, and we'll tell you which we'd use and why.

  • Spray foam

Polyurethane foam sprayed onto the roof deck, walls or rim joists. It expands into gaps and seals air leaks as it insulates.

    Best for
Roof decks, walls, rim joists and irregular framing
    Worth knowing
The most effective option we install, and the most expensive
  • Blown-in

Loose cellulose or fiberglass, much of it recycled, blown in by machine to an even depth.

    Best for
Open attic floors and hard-to-reach spaces
    Worth knowing
Can often go right over existing insulation to bring an attic up to the recommended level
  • Batt

Pre-cut sections of fiberglass or cellulose, sized to fit between studs and joists.

    Best for
Open walls, floors over crawlspaces and new construction
    Worth knowing
Affordable and simple, though gaps around wiring and pipes cost it some performance
  • Foam board

Rigid panels of foam insulation, often with a foil facing.

    Best for
Exterior walls, roofs, crawlspace and foundation walls
    Worth knowing
Adds a continuous layer over the framing, where heat otherwise slips through the wood

How much does your attic need?

Insulation is rated by R-value, a measure of how well it resists heat moving through it. Higher is better. Alabama and the Florida Panhandle fall in climate zones 2 and 3, where ENERGY STAR recommends:

  • R49for an attic with no insulation
  • +R38on top, if you already have 3–4 inches

How many inches that takes depends on the material. We measure what's up there and tell you exactly what it needs.

Source: ENERGY STAR recommended home insulation R-values, based on the 2021 IECC.

One attic joist bay: 3 to 4 inches of existing insulation, with R38 blown in over it to reach about R49.

What happens after you call

  1. We look before we quote

A specialist checks your attic, walls and crawlspace, measures what's there and finds the air leaks that let heat around the insulation.

  2. You get a plan ranked by payback

Recommendations are ordered by how quickly each one pays you back, so you can fix the biggest problem first and plan for the rest.

  3. Install day

The crew protects your floors and furniture, installs to the depth in your plan and cleans up before they leave.

  4. We check the work

We confirm coverage and depth before we go. Blower door testing is available if you want before-and-after numbers.

How much attic insulation do I need in Alabama or the Florida Panhandle?

Alabama and the Florida Panhandle are in climate zones 2 and 3. For those zones ENERGY STAR recommends R49 for an attic with no insulation, or adding R38 if you already have 3 to 4 inches. We measure what's in your attic before we recommend anything.

Which type of insulation is best?

It depends on where it goes. Spray foam is the most effective option we install and the most expensive. Blown-in suits open attic floors and hard-to-reach spaces. Batt works for open walls, floors over crawlspaces and new construction. Foam board fits exterior walls, roofs, crawlspace and foundation walls.

Can new insulation go over my old insulation?

Often, yes. Blown-in insulation can usually go right over existing insulation to bring an attic up to the recommended level. If the old insulation is wet, compressed, moldy or contaminated by pests, we remove it first.

What does R-value mean?

R-value measures how well insulation resists heat moving through it. The higher the R-value, the better it keeps heat out in summer and in during winter. How many inches you need to reach a given R-value depends on the material.

Do you insulate commercial buildings?

Yes. Eco Three installs spray foam and other insulation in commercial buildings as well as homes.

What areas does Eco Three serve?

We serve Alabama and the Florida Panhandle from four offices: Huntsville (256.716.8900), Birmingham (205.314.3500), the Alabama Gulf Coast (251.615.1330) and Santa Rosa Beach, Florida (850.389.5681).
